Implicit bias can be found in technology all around us, from social media to crucial healthcare algorithms. But what is implicit bias?
Implicit bias refers to the unconscious attitudes or sterotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions.
An algorithm is a set of instructions to solve a particular problem. Everything and everyone needs to these algorithms for everyday applications.
Without these algorithms, our everyday lives would be significantly
more difficult. But what if we were to tell you that these
algorithms are already failing to work for a majority of the
population?
The reason for this is that algorithms themselves can
have implicit bias. The companies that provide these algorithms to
run our social media and even our healthcare systems are made up of
teams that don't reflect the populace. That is the problem our
website is trying to address. We want to hold these companies
accountable.
